More than anything, Mei wants to belong. She senses, very acutely, that she should be doing something with her life -- but has no idea what that is. She feels stuck in limbo, aimlessly bouncing from activity to task to obligation, useless and lost. The only natural talent she's discovered is the ability to recall an irrelevant detail about something completely unrelated, and only at the worst possible time.
Despite this, she tries her best to be happy, and it takes little to entertain or cheer her up -- especially around friends, she forces herself to be bubbly and optimistic, and then blames herself immediately when something goes wrong. Naturally introverted, timid and shy, she only plucks up the courage to go against the flow when it's really not the time to be making waves.
She chokes under pressure and has a habit of bursting into tears when even mildly distressed, even as she's acknowledging she's too old for such behaviour. Being rejected is tantamount to the end of the world, as what other people think is of the highest priority to Mei. She's painfully eager to help out, even at the expense of her own comfort, and remains oblivious when she gets taken advantage of; if whoever she's around has no expectations of her when she will just create them in her own mind, and then become miserable when she fails to reach such ridiculous demands.

Mei had no fighting skills at all when she was drafted into the war -- she wasn't even a fan of checkers, because taking her opponents pieces made her uncomfortable. Hell, she barely even comprehended which end of a knife to hold because the very idea of killing something made her physically ill.
The fact she shows improvement can only be claimed when compared against what she was. It's clear from the start that she isn't part of the team because she has something to contribute -- but rather, because they have something they can give to her.
Physically she is weak, and her reaction to something flying at her is to squeal and duck her head. She's quick and agile when running, but forgets this in her panic. She bruises easily and has a low pain threshold, as well as overly high empathy. Basically, she's not cut out to be a fighter, and this never changes.
As part of the group, she sticks strictly to long range -- getting close to the action will make her freeze and panic, even when backed up by a stronger member, and it's best just to avoid that liability. For the most part she is left to handle small tasks (be here, flip this switch, do this non-combat thing) or for basic recon, and develops an ability for basic first-aid out of necessity.
Izanagi bestows upon her an unbreakable golden string, and eventually she figures out she can use this for traps -- she can't bear to hurt anything, but none of them are better than she at springing an ambush.
Later, her true nature is revealed -- she loses a lot of weight, her teeth sharpen, and her fingernails grow into curved claws. You need such things, really, when you feel on the newly buried in the dead of night.
She was never meant to be a warrior. She was always a scavenger.

PAST
After having a fling and falling pregnant, Mei's mother chose to flee to America than admit to her indiscretion. This seemed like a great solution until she realized that meant she was alone -- she sought solace in various spiritual advisers, and latched onto the one that told her what she wanted to hear: this was the way it should be, this was the way it was meant to be, and she should regret nothing. Her daughter was destined to be a god among men, and it was up to her, the mother, to raise her to be the best she could be.
Mei learned from an early age that something was expected of her, and fought to live up to these demands -- and she generally succeeded, keeping up good grades and an ability to interact with other human beings. But that wasn't enough, that was still mundane, and her mother displayed a strange bitterness as she grew older that nothing could alleviate. Mei did her best to make her smile, creating grander and grander dreams -- she would be a doctor. then an astronaut, then the first female president! She would be amazing!
Things stopped coming so naturally as she neared her teens, and her insecurities got the better of her. Her mother became more and more unhappy, and eventually, there was only one conclusion: it was Mei's fault, and it had always been her fault.
TL;DR: dumb child out of her depth always.

Lily Mei considers Lily to be the coolest person ever!! and quickly idolizes her. They spend a lot of time together, and she clearly views the older girl as the sister she never had. Lucas Lucas is big and strong and intimidating, so it's kind of funny how flustered he gets around her. Despite her best efforts they are never close, and she remains unsure if he's nice to her because he likes her, or because Lily tells him he has to be. |
Xander From the moment she meets him, Mei has a crush on Xander so huge it can't be described with our pathetic mortal language, and it's not long before it becomes mutual. Their relationship progresses gradually from a student/mentor to something more, even if she never really understands what he sees in her. Lexi Lexi is stand-offish and scary, and all Mei's attempts to be friends are cruelly dismissed -- but then suddenly they're bffs and it's all very bewildering?? The brunette's influence does shove Mei towards her true potential, but it never occur to her that she could say no because Lexi is just so convinced she knows best. Izanagi Mei isn't sure she believes he's her father, but he's just so sad she goes along with it anyway. Even when she finally accepts the truth she sees him as more someone to pity and reassure than someone to worship, and they never have the same kind of dynamic as her friends do with their deities. |
- After a long day, will she wind down by making little sculptures. This started when she was a toddler and discovered play-doh, but has progressed to clay as she's gotten older. She's actually pretty skilled at it, but never thinks to show them off. - Enjoys making little bento boxes, and often brings them as gifts for her friends. She doesn't enjoy cooking the stuff, but the decoration and creation part is fun. - Genuinely enjoys doing other people's hair. |
